On Marc’s plane, he explained the meaning of the phrase to Jesse.

“‘Held together with wire’ is an Argentinian phrase that refers to the way the whole society is so broken. It was especially true under the former military dictatorship. If you wanted anything, you had to get around the corruption, the dysfunction, the incompetence everywhere. And their currency is shit – an iPhone at list price would be two thousand dollars if you bought it legit there, so people have friends buy them in the US and bring them home, for instance. Everything’s a workaround – that’s why there are so many computer hackers in Argentina.”

“And the shit currency explains why Bitcoin would be a very attractive alternative to the official money. But that doesn’t explain why you know all this,” Jesse pressed.

“Ah. Well. You see, Argentinian hackers are so good, and to be honest, such a good deal, that I’ve hired quite a few of them. Chinese hackers are surpassing them in a lot of ways, including cost, but, you know, China. I can’t trust that any work done there isn’t fed directly to the government, or stolen by it. So, we do so much business with guys down there that we have a corporate apartment in Buenos Aires.”

Jesse smiled. “You clever boy.”

Marc idly waved the compliment away. “I have my moments.”
